Our client, Catherine, wanted to extend her living space to include a play area for her two boisterous children, as well as a small space for her work. She and her doctor husband live in a semi-detached house on the outskirts of Kuching. Instead of extending their home, we chose to design a stand-alone ‘play house’ tucked neatly within the building setback.

Since this space was intended for young people, we thought that its design and construction could be used to teach the end-users about climate, materials, and nature. The result is a light steel structure with a loft space for Catherine’s office, indoor and outdoor play areas, and a large roof designed to provide shade and collect rainwater, which is then stored in a pond for rearing small fish.
