Our second project with the people of Mount Hope was their university campus in Tawangmangu, Surakarta – with more students on the way, expansion was required.
A series of two- and three-storey blocks are built around a central courtyard, to create a link between the classrooms and the inner court. Like the primary school in Balai Karangan, the scheme was designed to be as efficient as possible and to be built in phases.
As the clients requested to retain the existing courtyard as a space for community and togetherness, design choices with similar intentions were added within the building as well. Corridors are widened at regular intervals into small pockets – to be utilised as seating, mini socialising spaces, or planter boxes.
Noise from surrounding activities was a prevalent issue for the university. An exterior-facing corridor with a batik-inspired screen acts as a semi-permeable membrane for light and sound.
