Our first project with the people of Mount Hope, this primary school extension was designed to simultaneously support and eventually replace the existing timber structures, which had decayed over time. The completion of this project subsequently led to another project in Tawangmangu by the same client.
As the new structures for the extension were being cast, they would also be placed beneath the existing building, propping it up as the old structures were removed. This effectively doubles the available floor area, with the existing footprint of the building serving as an open multipurpose space for events and the classrooms located directly behind it.
Over the course of a year, several weekend trips were made to aid with labour – everything from digging pad footings to organising games for the children who stay on campus grounds over the weekends.
