The original Tun Jugah Food Gallery was a generic shopping mall food court, catering to a wide range of tastes after a day of shopping. However, in recent years, both the retail mix and clientele have shifted towards young professionals seeking a conducive environment for a working lunch.

We aimed to recreate the experience of eating street food, reminiscent of bustling markets and the lively five-foot ways. The silhouette of the concertina grilles evokes the charm of Chinatown shop fronts, while the soft glow of incandescent bulbs recalls the ambiance of night markets. Everyday items commonly found in coffee shops are repurposed in imaginative ways – plastic stools are suspended from the ceiling as screens for the dining rooms, and enamel crockery from the 1970s serves as both signage and decor.

Our furniture design features clean lines reminiscent of school days, encouraging patrons to reminisce about sharing food and stories on long benches. It’s a nostalgic nod to ‘them days’ when everything seemed better. This transformation goes beyond mere renovation; it symbolises a coming of age.
