The Kitchen Verandah is part of of the Open House anthology, beginning with Open House I.
After relocating the wet kitchen for Open House II, the existing corridor is exposed to rainwater splashing. While it is a path connecting the car porch, wet kitchen and dining pavilion, we imagine it to be where people stop by for a chat, pass groceries, and for the housekeeper’s rest area, and so on. The design takes on the spirit of ‘selang’ in a Malay kampung house, which is a flexible space allowing people to socialise spontaneously, with the addition of storage spaces beneath the seating. The structure is divided into smaller movable panels to encourage space personalisation, also allowing it to be open when rain drizzles.
Around the same time, we also designed the dining pavilion, and subsequently a nursery, a bar store-cum-greenhouse, and a dog house.
